A Rochester police officer was hit in the back of the head while trying to make an arrest on the city’s west side Tuesday night, the department announced.
Officers responded to the area of Champlain Street and Jefferson Avenue at 9:20 p.m. to take someone into custody with an active arrest warrant.
The officers reported hearing a gunshot during a brief foot chase with the suspect. That report was unfounded, but body-camera footage is being reviewed. The suspect was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a loaded handgun, according to Rochester Police Capt. Mark Mura.
While officers were taking the first suspect into custody, “a second individual attempted to interfere by punching one of the officers in the back of the head,” Mura said in an email.
That man was “immediately taken into custody,” Mura said.
Kamel Davis, 24, of Rochester, allegedly possessed the loaded handgun, Mura said. He was charged with second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest. Davis was wanted on an “out-of-county gang assault arrest warrant,” Mura said.
Lawrence Rogers Jr., 25, of Fairport, who allegedly punched an officer in the back of the head, was charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest, and criminal impersonation. He also had an outstanding felony warrant out of Wayne County, Mura said.
The injured officer was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but is expected to be fine. The officer suffered some bruising and swelling on his head.
